Literacy is the ability to read and write. Standards of
literacy are different in different
societies. In the modern context, the term implies reading
and writing at a level
sufficient to make a written communication. In some cases
include other skills such as elementary algebra or computer skills. Many
researchers believe the level of literacy as crucial in evaluating the human
capital of a region. The reason for this view is the fact that literate people
can be trained much cheaper than illiterate. It is believed that literacy
increases the opportunities for employment and access to higher education. For
example, in Kerala , India , female and child mortality
decreased significantly in the 60 years of 20 century, when the girls sent to
school after the educational reform of 1948, began to raise families. On the
other hand, according to some recent studies such correlations might be due not
literacy, but the actual visit to the school.
A more comprehensive way, literacy is defined as a process
in which the individual builds his capacity to understand grammar and its
variations. This process is not just to buy these skills (encoding and
decoding) by the act of reading, but the ability to interpret, understand,
critique. Today reframe these capabilities mentioned previously only be
achieved if students have access to all kinds of text. The student must find
the social uses of reading and writing. Literacy also involves developing new
ways of understanding and use of language in general. The literacy of an
individual promotes socialization, because it allows the establishment of new
types of symbolic exchanges with other individuals, such as access to cultural
assets and facilities offered by social institutions.
Literacy is one factor propelling the conscious exercise of
citizenship and the development
Learning to read is an important
time in education, which begins in literacy and extends
throughout basic education. It Is to
ensure that one can read and understand texts at any level of complexity of
numeric. After the initial phase of literacy, it is necessary to practice
reading and interpreting texts. Once literate, the individual can increase
their level of reading and literacy in order to become an autonomous. Moreover,
literacy alone does not ensure the development of the citizen, as a panacea for
every evil arises from the lack of knowledge.
